Featured Artist Lou Gramm, the Original Voice of Foreigner!!!
Associated Acts: Foreigner
Primary Instrument: Vocals, Song writing
Foreigner was formed in New York City in 1976 by veteran English musicians Mick Jones and Ian McDonald, and American vocalist Lou Gramm. Gramm was the lead vocalist on all of Foreigner’s hit songs, including “Feels Like the First Time”, “Cold as Ice”, “Long, Long Way from Home”, “Hot Blooded”, “Double Vision”, “Blue Morning, Blue Day”, “Head Games”, “Dirty White Boy”, ”Urgent”, “Juke Box Hero”, “Break It Up” and “Say You Will”.
Their first 8 singles cracked the Billboard Top 20, (4 went Top 10) making them the first group since the Beatles to achieve this in 1980. The self-titled album, Foreigner, was released on March 8, 1977 and is a certified 5x platinum record in the United States.
Among the 39 singles released by the band, 14 of them became top 20 hits in the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He co-wrote most of the songs for the band, which achieved two of its biggest hits with the ballads “Waiting for a Girl Like You”, which spent ten weeks at #2 on the 1981-82 American Hot 100, and “I Want to Know What Love Is”, which was a #1 hit internationally (US & UK) in 1985.
Lou’s solo efforts were very successful. Ready or Not and Long Hard Look, yielded 2 more top 10 hits. Midnight Blue was the most played song of 1987.
In April 1997 Gramm was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor, and underwent major brain surgery. Damage to his pituitary gland caused Gramm to gain weight, and likewise affected his stamina and voice. Over the course of 10 years Gramm made a full recovery and is now rocking as hard as ever!
In 2013 Gramm released an autobiography, called Juke Box Hero, My five decades in Rock and Roll.
Along with Mick Jones, Lou Gramm was inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame on June 13, 2013.
